Year 1 Learning Opportunities – Monday 27th April

Good morning Year 1!

We hope you had a lovely weekend and enjoyed the sunshine.

Remember these 5 S’s for sun safety:

Slip, Slop, Slap, Slide, Shade…

  • SLIP on a t-shirt.
  • SLOP on sunscreen.
  • SLAP on a broad brimmed hat.
  • SLIDE on quality sunglasses.
  • SHADE from the sun whenever possible.

Look after your skin – stay safe in the sun!

Here is a list of the learning opportunities for today.

Kind Regards,

The Year 1 Team!

English: ‘Time to Travel’

During our new topic, this half term, you will be travelling around the world to learn about different countries. Over the next 3 days, you will be Creating a Travel Agency Role Play Area to begin your travelling experience.

Look at the attached Travel Agency information with an adult and watch the clips to familiarise with how a travel agency works. Make signs, posters, brochures, tickets, passport, boarding passes, calculator, calendar, world map, phone, etc. that would be used in a travel agency over the next 3 days.

Let your imagination take you to far away places!

Maths: Tick-Tocking with Time!

Make a clock for the Travel Agents Role Play Area. Practise telling the time on the hour, half past, quarter past and quarter too the hour and think about the hands that go around the clock (hour, minute and second hand).

Top Tip: Learning how to tell the time is something that is ongoing. It helps to learn times that you are familiar with through the day, for example, breakfast time, lunchtime, dinner time, bed time.

Challenge: Answer questions, such as, in half an hour, we will go in the garden, what time will that be?

Other: Tidy, Tidy, Tidy!

Place toys in different areas of your garden or a space. Clear all the toys by throwing them into a designated area or container. What is the fastest time that this can be done? How can it be made harder? (Have a set throwing point further away from the designated area or container). How can you improve your time? (Tidy one section at a time). Can it be done in a given time?

PHONICS: Please see the attached PDF for this week’s daily phonic sessions and support structure.  This is to guide parents when supporting their child with phonics and will be most effective if it is done every day.

  • Phase 5: ay, oy, alternative pronunciation for ‘i’ and ‘c’

Useful phonics websites: (An adult must always check these)

READING: Oxford Reading Owl has a fantastic selection of Oxford Reading books for the children to read at their level.

  1. Follow the link: https://home.oxfordowl.co.uk/.
  2. Click on ‘Browse E-books’
  3. Click on ‘free e-book library’.
  4. Choose a book

As well as listening to the children read, it also benefits them to hear adults read and discuss the story.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY: As well as having fun in the garden for daily exercise (throwing and catching, running, skipping, bouncing on a trampoline, etc), some other fun routines for the children to follow are:

  1. Wake Up, Shake Up Lazytown
  2. Cosmic Kids Yoga.
  3. Joe Wicks Daily PE lessons.
  4. Andy’s Wild Workouts
  5. GoNoodle (YouTube videos)

These can be typed into a search engine by an adult who will then need to check them.

Have fun!
