Reading in Year 1!

Reading Books (Autumn Term)

Subject to the government guidelines and in order to reduce the risk of Covid-19, we will be providing your child with a reading pack (containing two books) appropriate to their reading level. Starting from today (14/09/20), your child will be bringing home their first reading pack for this week.

Reading packs will be handed out on a Monday and must be returned in school by the Thursday of that week. All books need to be sent back whether your child has read them or not by Thursday. This therefore, allows us to quarantine the reading books over the weekend ready for the following Monday.

Here are some ideas of how you can utilise the reading books:

-Always refer to the pictures in the book before reading the text. Discuss characters, background and what you think is going on.

-Look out for any key sounds that your child may be working on during their phonics lessons. For example, digraphs, trigraphs. Please see http://www.letters-and-sounds.com/what-is-letters-and-sounds.html for further information on the sounds that we will be working on. Please look specifically at phase 3 to phase 5.

-Work through the 5 W’s as your child reads with you (Who, What, When, Where and Why)

-Predict what might happen next in the book.

-Why not try changing the end of the story? What else could happen?

-Refer to the key questions at the back of the book (if applicable).

-Look out for any predictable phrases or words that may appear in the book. For example, looking out for repetition .

Thank you for your support and understanding. Please do not hesitate to ask any questions. We will be covering this during our Parent Workshop on Thursday 17th September at 15:30pm should you wish to follow this up with us.
