Friday 15th January- Year 1 Home Learning

Good morning Year One! Its Friday and what fun-filled week we’ve had! The hard work and resilience that we have seen from you this week has been phenomenal, you all deserve a well earned break at the weekend!

Your learning for today is as follows:

Castle Challenge 1

Crown Jewel Phonics- Every King or Queen needs a crown and now is the chance for you to make your own! Firstly, cut a strip of paper, with a zig-zag edge, big enough to fit around your head. Then cellotape or glue the ends together to make your crown.

Next, cut out 25 small diamonds out of paper and write the following words on them:

  1. yad
  2. dop
  3. uct
  4. meck
  5. joil
  6. drell
  7. fusp
  8. quisk
  9. shop
  10. check
  11. sweep
  12. soft
  13. yards
  14. vaw
  15. meast
  16. waib
  17. zome
  18. throst
  19. spraw
  20. fried
  21. cute
  22. strip
  23. scraps
  24. vanish
  25. thankful

Find a box to put them all in. Then, your job is to carefully take out the jewels one at time and read them. Sort them into real and fake words. Once you are happy with your sorting, colour in the real word diamonds and stick them onto your crown.

At the end of this lesson, you should have your very own crown, decorated with diamonds with real words written on them!

Today, we will be moving on to applying what you have been working on this week, with your subtraction number sentences, to word problems. Choose six of the word problems below, read through them and see if you can identify the subtraction number sentence and answers!

Super Challenge- See if you can answer all of the word problems!

Top tip– When reading through the word problems, have a coloured pencil to hand, to highlight any key information that you will need for your number sentence. Remember you can use objects to help you work out the answer, for example pasta. Please see the example below.

Now you have a go yourself!

Oxford Reading Owl has a fantastic selection of Oxford Reading books for the children to read at their level.

  1. Follow the link:
  2. Click on ‘Browse E-books’
  3. Click on ‘free e-book library’.
  4. Choose a book
  5. You can be more specific in your book search and type by selecting browse by age or browse by series.

As well as listening to the children read, it also benefits them to hear adults read and discuss the story together.

Time for a laugh with a cracking castle joke!

A: A Knight Light

Don’t forget we have our Google Meet catch up on Monday (18th January 2021). 1M will be at 9:30am and 1C at 10am. We would like you to bring along something which shows us what you did at the weekend. For example, a wooden spoon if you’ve been baking or a picture you’ve drawn.

Have a fantastic day and a restful weekend!
