Friday 12th February- Year 1 Home Learning

Good Morning Year One from Miss Potter!

Happy Friday! It is the last day before half term! All of the staff members from Year 1 have been inspired by everything that we have received from all of you this term. You overcome any barriers to learning and truly displayed our Kelvedon values. You should all be incredibly proud of yourselves and you all deserve a well earned break over the half term!

Castle Challenge One: Maths

Lets finish off the week with measuring using rulers.

Take a look at the video below, whereby Miss Catchpole explains how you measure in centimetres using a ruler.

Now, looking back at the Shrek characters that you ordered on Monday, we would like you use your ruler to measure how tall each character is in centimetres (cm). Please measure and label the height of each character.

Castle Challenge Two: Make your own quiz

As we are now at the end of this half term and we have learnt so much about Castles, we would like you to create your very own castle quiz. Have a look back through your scrap to inspire you and to find different themes that we have learnt about each week, in order to help you write the questions and answers. Make sure you use your phonics knowledge to support you in sounding out any unfamiliar words.

We would like at least four questions and answers however, why not challenge yourself further and write more than four?

Once you have finished, quiz the people that you are living with and see if they have what it takes to complete your quiz.

Do they know as much about castles as you do?

Lets put them to the test!

Castle Challenge Three: PE

Dancing with Oti Mabuse

To finish off our Shrek themed week, take part in this Shrek dance class, led by Oti Mabuse. Some of you may recognise Oti Mabuse, as she is a famous professional dancer from Strictly Come Dancing. Get your groove on with ‘I’m a believer’.

This is the song that you will be dancing to during the above lesson. Have a little listen and see if you can remember the dance once you have finished the lesson.

READING: Oxford Reading Owl has a fantastic selection of Oxford Reading books for the children to read at their level.

  1. Follow the link:
  2. Click on ‘Browse E-books’
  3. Click on ‘free e-book library’.
  4. Choose a book
  5. You can be more specific in your book search and type by selecting browse by age or browse by series.

As well as listening to the children read, it also benefits them to hear adults read and discuss the story together.

For further learning ideas whilst working at home, please have a look at the link below.

Time for a laugh with a cracking castle joke!

Q: What did the dragon order at the restaurant?
A: Hot wings.

Have a fantastic weekend and break over the half term! Remember to take the time, over half term, to recharge your batteries, have lots of fun and why not try something new?

The Year 1 Team are also on half term, so will not be contactable over the course of the week. We can’t wait to hear all about what you’ve been up to and who knows, we might get some more snow!

Thank you parents and guardians for your continued support, during this difficult time, for us all.

We look forward to hearing from you all again, in just over a weeks time, on the 22nd of February!

We wish you all a happy, healthy and safe half term!
