Year 2 maths

In Year 2, we began to look at using number lines to help with our addition.  This method is one of a few that the children will be taught; we have provided the example below to show how this works.

Calculation to do:  26 + 41

Start with 41 at beginning of number line as largest number.

We need to partition the 26 to work out how many tens and how many ones.  So 2 tens and 6 ones.  We add the tens first. (We have previously worked on adding and subtracting 10). In this case add 2 tens and then we add the ones.  Attached is a picture showing the visual working out we’d ask the children to do.

The children enjoyed completing the number line work and we will continue to revisit as needed.
