In Year 2, we began to look at using number lines to help with our addition. This method is one of a few that the children will be taught; we have provided the example below to show how this works.
Calculation to do: 26 + 41
Start with 41 at beginning of number line as largest number.
We need to partition the 26 to work out how many tens and how many ones. So 2 tens and 6 ones. We add the tens first. (We have previously worked on adding and subtracting 10). In this case add 2 tens and then we add the ones. Attached is a picture showing the visual working out we’d ask the children to do.
The children enjoyed completing the number line work and we will continue to revisit as needed.
