Year 2 have been learning how to change verbs into the past tense.

They have learnt the following rules:

  1. Add ed to the verb  – look  – looked
  2. Add d to verbs ending in e  – like – liked
  3. Verbs containing a short vowel sound with one consonant sound at the end, the consonant is doubled then ed is added – chat – chatted
  4. Verbs ending in y which make the ee or the igh sound, changed the y to an i and then add ed – hurry – hurried and try – tried

The children have a rhyme to help them with the last rule:

‘Bye bye y, I’m adding an i’.
