A Message From Mary Anning

Hello Year 2. Let me introduce myself. My name is Mary Anning.

Thank you for sending me lots of questions. I will do my best to answer some of them.

When were you born?

I was born on 21st May 1799.

Where did you live?

I lived in the seaside town of Lyme Regis in Dorset.

Do you have any brothers or sisters?

I have a brother called Joseph.

How did you survive the lightning strike?

My parents said it was a miracle!

Did you have any pets?

Yes I had a dog called Tray.

Did you enjoy fossil hunting on the beach?

I loved it. It was all I wanted to do, to walk on the beach and stare at the stones. It was like an itch, just knowing there were fossils out there waiting to be discovered.

What did you do with the fossils you found?

We didn’t have much money when I was young so my brother and I sold our small fossils on a stall for a penny each. When I was older, my larger fossils were sold and put on display in the British Museum in London.

What were the largest fossils you found?

I found fossils of an Ichthyosaur, a Plesiosaurus and a Dimorphodon.

They now say I am one of the greatest fossil hunters ever. How amazing is that!
