‘Near doubles’ and ‘near number bonds’

3F have been learning strategies for adding numbers together in their head without having to use their fingers. We use near numbers bonds (if 6 and 4 is 10 . . . 6 and 3 must be 9) and near doubles (if double 5 is 10 . . . 5 and 4 must be 9). The children have been able to use these skills with larger numbers like 49 + 50 and also when adding three numbers together 2 + 8 + 5 (we add the number bond to 10 together first). The children are really happy with the progress they have made with this.
